Longwood employs seasonal employees in all areas of the Gardens. Hours vary by position. All seasonal employees receive free access to the Gardens, a discount at the Gardens Shop, and a discount at the Terrace Restaurant cafeteria when working.

Guest Services Seasonal Positions

For all positions work schedules may vary but could include weekends, evenings and holidays.

Guest Services Associate
The seasonal Guest Services Associate will provide various duties related to guest relations and being a Host at Longwood Gardens. Duties will include, but are not limited to, greeting guests, assisting with set-up of programs and daily operational needs, and providing crowd control during peak visitation and special events. We are looking for candidates who have exceptional customer service, communication and hospitality skills. This position requires walking outdoors, lifting light loads, and working in all weather conditions. Work schedules will include weekends, holidays, and evenings.

Guest Admissions Representatives
The seasonal Guest Admissions Representatives will be responsible for selling daily admission tickets, memberships, and special event tickets along with greeting and communicating pertinent Longwood information to our guests regarding current displays, exhibit, shows and events. We are looking for candidates who have exceptional customer service, communication and hospitality skills. Candidates must have experience with Microsoft Applications, as well as Point of Sale systems. Candidates should have excellent phone etiquette and be willing to work in a call center environment. Job requires the ability to work standing or sitting for long periods time, and the ability to work in all different weather environments at multiple different onsite ticketing venues. Longwood Gardens is open 365 days a year. The work schedule includes weekends, days, evenings and holidays.

Security Officers
The seasonal Security Officer will be responsible for ensuring the security and safety of guests, employees, and the properties at Longwood Gardens. Individuals must have the personality and ability to deal well with the public and fellow employees. Previous security experience preferred. This position requires the ability to work a flexible work schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Housekeeping 
The seasonal housekeeping worker will perform various duties to ensure the cleanliness and excellent physical appearance of both buildings and grounds. Selected applicants will also work with various departments to assist in the setup of functions and events. We are looking for candidates who have exceptional customer service, communication and hospitality skills. Work schedules will include weekends, evenings and holidays.

Performance Technicians
The seasonal Performance Technician will be responsible to the set-up, operation of, and strike of sound and lighting systems in indoor and outdoor venues of various sizes as directed by supervisor and internal and external clients. Additional duties will include typical stage crew jobs such as moving heavy equipment, building and striking temporary stages, and some equipment maintenance. We are looking for candidates with experience with computerized lighting systems and/or small and medium sized sound reinforcement systems (12-48 channels) and computer technologies used for public presentations. Work scheduled will include weekends, evenings and holidays.

 Plant Sales
The seasonal will be responsible for assisting the Plant Specialist in the Gardens Shop greenhouse. Duties will include assisting guests, processing plant shipments, maintaining and selling plants for the shop. The preferred candidate will be friendly, have excellent communication skills with a background in horticulture and retail. Duties will require some lifting. Hours will include evenings, weekends and holidays. 

Horticulture Seasonal Positions

Outdoor Display
Seasonal employees working in the Outdoor Display Division have the opportunity to work with staff gardeners in the various outdoor gardens areas, assisting with a variety of tasks. These may include planting, weeding, mulching, watering, pruning, deadheading and general garden maintenance. Working as a seasonal employee in Outdoor Display is an excellent way to gain or improve your hands-on gardening knowledge and experience as you work with professional gardeners in an exceptional display garden. Applicants with prior horticultural knowledge or experience are preferred, but we will also train motivated individuals.

To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.

Research 
Seasonal employees working in the Research Division will perform numerous manual tasks and work under the direction of the several greenhouse and nursery gardeners. The tasks include, but are not limited to: watering, fertilizing, and maintenance of plants, laboratory work, plant breeding, tissue culture, mulching and various research activities. This work is performed in either greenhouses, labs or at the outdoor summer growing locations. Prior horticultural experience and/or knowledge is preferable.

The term for these positions vary. To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.

Floriculture
Seasonal employees working in Floriculture have the opportunity to work with staff in various locations throughout the Gardens. In this position, seasonals may work in Indoor Display, at our Nursery or in the Greenhouse Production Area. Seasonals in the Floriculture Division will perform a variety of tasks under the direction of our gardeners and growers, as part of a diverse team of staff, students and volunteers. The tasks include, but are not limited to: Moving, staking, tying, potting, watering, fertilizing, grooming, pinching, and pruning of containerized plants as they are prepared for display throughout the gardens. They will also work around and sometimes with pot filling machines, fork lifts, trucks, and utility vehicles. This work is performed in either the Conservatory, greenhouses or at the outdoor summer growing locations. Prior horticultural experience and/or knowledge is preferable.

Grounds 
Seasonal employees in Grounds will work with the Groundskeepers performing a variety of tasks throughout the gardens. Primary work will include maintaining the turfgrass areas. This includes edging beds, string trimming, hand watering, mowing (operating various types and sizes of turf mowing equipment), along with operating small trucks and tractors and utility vehicles.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
Seasonal employees in IPM are responsible for activities associated with insects, disease and other biological issues across the conservatories, greenhouses and outdoor areas of Longwood Gardens. The work includes: scouting for insects and disease, removing algae and invasive species from lakes and ponds, laboratory work and other pest management activities.

Ability to work in the diverse weather and environmental conditions are required. To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license. PA Pesticide Applicator’s license is a plus.

Arboriculture
Seasonal employees in Arboriculture will be assisting the arborist staff in the trimming and removal of trees. Some of the responsibilities will include operating small dump trucks, brush chippers, stump grinders and small chain saws. Seasonal employees will also clean-up debris, rake leaves and twigs, and haul small logs and brush.

Nursery Woody Plant Production
Seasonal employees working at the nursery will perform numerous manual tasks and work under the direction of the nursery gardeners. The tasks include, but are not limited to: watering, fertilizing, and maintenance of plants, mulching and various nursery activities. This work is performed at the outdoor growing locations of the behind the scenes nursery. They will also work around and sometimes with tree spades, fork lifts, trucks, and utility vehicles. Working as a seasonal employee at the nursery is an excellent way to gain or improve your hands-on gardening knowledge and experience as you work with container plants and field grown trees and shrubs. Applicants with prior horticultural knowledge or experience are preferred, but we will also train motivated individuals.

Research Assistant – Seasonal – Plant Collection and Preservation
In this seasonal position the individual will be working closely with a Research Specialist in collecting plant material and processing it for scientific research. Ability to work in the diverse conditions found in greenhouses and the natural land areas of southeastern Pennsylvania is essential as is: attention to detail, an understanding of laboratory etiquette, and an interest in plant science. This person will work an average of 4 days per week, with some 5 day weeks during peak season, and must be able to work occasional weekends and evenings. Must have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license. 

Facilities Seasonal Positions

Civil Division
The seasonal worker in the Civil Division must have a good work ethic and a willingness to perform various tasks. Some of the duties of the seasonal worker in this area include: assisting the Mason Shop, water fountain debris removal, and the lifting and hauling of various heavy objects and material in all areas of the gardens. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license.

Boiler Room
Seasonal workers in the Boiler Room must have a good work ethic and a willingness to perform various tasks. The applicant will be involved in assisting our staff with yearly maintenance associated with boilers, steam and condensate systems. Includes valves, piping and pumps. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
