Groundskeeping
The Groundskeeping staff are responsible for mowing, seeding, sodding and fertilizing, as well as leaf clean-up and snow removal. The crew maintains 70 acres of turfgrass in the public portion of the Gardens, and another 30 acres in the perimeter lands.
The soil and compost crew provides soil, growing media, and mulch--and hauls organic debris to process it into usable products. Staff members maintain approximately nine acres of topsoil fields that allow Longwood to use its own topsoil in all of its displays. The soil pasteurization process prepares the soil for use in the Gardens. On average, the team handles 8,000 yards of compost and soil per year.
