Conservatory Interpretive Docent

Function:  Play an important role interacting with visitors while moving throughout the conservatory. Promote Longwood Gardens and share behind the scenes facts and helpful information with some of the nicest people – our Longwood Gardens' visitors. Play an interpretive role connecting our guests’ minds and hearts to this special place through informal interactions sharing your knowledge in the Conservatory.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Meet and greet visitors throughout the conservatory with a smile.
  • Assess which guests would welcome more extended interaction.
  • Ask and answer questions and promote Longwood Gardens.
  • Share your knowledge of Longwood Gardens and its history with guests.
  • Share specific plant/ conservatory knowledge you’ve learned.
  • Suggest further activities to guests such as special events, fountain shows, future visits.
  • Ask questions of appropriate staff to increase your knowledge when you need more information.
  • Use different display materials to help you interact with our visitors.

Requirements/Expectations:

  • Attend regular training sessions to learn more about different conservatory areas from Longwood staff and interpretation.
  • Commit to reviewing and improving your knowledge.
  • An enthusiastic and positive attitude
  • Enjoy interacting with many different types and ages of people
  • Have strong verbal skills and feel comfortable answering questions about the conservatory display and Longwood Gardens
  • Interest in working with staff to increase the guests’ enjoyment of their visit.
  • Follow Longwood Gardens policies, procedures, and standards

Time Required:

  • Three hour shifts mornings or afternoons any day of the week. Minimum of 6 hours per month. This is a year round position.
