Employ real-life problem-solving skills by applying basic principles of computation, measurement, geometry, statistics and data analysis in this creative, hands-on mathematics-based program.
Uncover the mysteries of mathematics that lie hidden in the garden with engaging activities highlighting geometry as well as measurement. Students will investigate gardens that exhibit the use of shape, pattern, symmetry and balance. After garden exploration, students will design their own garden plot for bulb “planting.”
K-2: Students compare standard and non-standard units of measurement as they measure their own “garden bed” and create their bulb garden.
3-5: Students compare standard and non-standard units of measurement while finding the perimeter and area of a garden plot. They apply their calculations to a bulb garden design.
6-8: Students use the geometric method to calculate the area of an irregularly-shaped garden bed and calculate the number of bulbs they could plant based on their design.
9-12: Students apply horticulture math to calculate the area of an irregular-shaped garden bed and the number of bulbs they will plant based on their design.
