Assistant Guest Experience Manager / Manager on Duty

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Assistant Guest Experience Manager / Manager on Duty. We are looking for an individual who will assist in managing the daily operations of the Gardens ensuring the health and safety of our Guests and Staff. In addition this individual will lead our staff on duty in providing world-class guest service delivery at all times, while ensuring consistent and holistic fulfillment of our guest experience and programmatic goals.

Responsibilities will include serving as a Manager on Duty and acting as the front line of communication for the Guest Services Team, in addition to assisting with crowd management, guest resolution and ensuring the Gardens are guest ready. Additional duties will involve hiring, training and scheduling staff. This position requires a great deal of walking and standing, work is both indoors and outdoors and will require lifting up to 30 lbs.. Longwood Gardens is open 365 days a year. The daily work schedule varies from season to season, but will include holidays, evenings and consistent weekend work (at least 1 weekend day/night per week).

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5+ yrs experience supervising staff and come from a customer service, retail or hospitality background. Experience managing large scale events is a plus. Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications is a must.

Visitor Center Assistant Manager

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Visitor Center Assistant Manager. We are looking for an individual to join our management team to assist in the daily operations of our Visitor Center, including supporting guest services and the admissions and ticketing operation for more than 1.3 million guests, event, performing arts and membership sales. This position reports to the Visitor Center Manager and is one of three Assistant Visitor Center Managers. Responsibilities will include hiring, managing, training and scheduling staff. This individual will assist with crowd control, access to the gardens, rentals, resolution of guest issues, and monitoring of guest flow inside the Visitor Center throughout the day. In addition to managing the daily operations on the floor, responsibilities include management of our contact center, which handles over 120,000 calls annually. Operating hours and work schedule vary from season to season, and include evenings, consistent weekend work (at least 1 weekend day/night per week), and all major holidays.
The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience supervising staff and have a customer service, ticketing, non-profit or hospitality background. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications and experience using a point-of-sale ticketing system is required. Knowledge of ticketing operations, reporting, guest service standards and familiarity with technical systems is required.

Specialty Chrysanthemum Production Assistant

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time greenhouse grower. This individual will join a team of growers producing over 1000 unique florist crops in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. The grower’s primary responsibility will be to assist our Chrysanthemum Specialist in applying techniques developed in Japan and China to grow chrysanthemums in unique forms that are a critical part of Longwood’s internationally renowned Chrysanthemum Festival. This position will also assist growers with all aspects of crop production including: transplanting, potting, repotting, staking, tying, grooming plants, watering, fertilizing, and receiving and delivering plant material and will at times work within other areas of Greenhouse Production to learn Longwood’s high standards for producing beautiful display plants. At times this individual will supervise and mentor students and volunteers in proper greenhouse growing techniques. This is a unique, hands-on position requiring great attention to detail. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty is required.

Minimum requirements include a two-year or four-year post-secondary degree in Horticulture with emphasis on Floriculture. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and problem solving skills and be effective working as part of a team as well as independently. Must have a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license and a forklift operator’s training certificate.

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Arborist. Candidates must have the skill and ability to apply proper pruning techniques, execute removals and practice all aspects of tree care as outlined in the ANSI A300 standards while complying with ANSI Z133 safety protocols. Candidates should have experience operating aerial lift trucks, chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and other small equipment used in arboriculture. A strong knowledge of plant health care is a plus. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are a must. Knowledge of MS Office (including Outlook, Excel, and Word) and general computer literacy is desired. Candidates should have an Associates degree or higher in a Forestry or similar field with a minimum of 3 years climbing experience as an arborist. An ISA Certified Arborist is preferred however uncertified applicants will be expected to obtain ISA certification within the first year. Candidates must have, or be willing to obtain, a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator License and Pennsylvania CDL Class B driver’s license within 6 months of employment.

Breeding and Research Specialist

Longwood Gardens is seeking a self-motivated, dynamic individual for the position of Breeding and Research Specialist. Research responsibilities include implementation of day-to-day breeding activities and management of the Longwood Research Nursery.  This individual will assist in coordinating and implementing plant breeding activities; manage Longwood’s Research Nursery; implement and execute meaningful research projects and hardy plant trials; disseminate research results through scientific papers, popular articles and presentations; participate in Longwood’s Plant Exploration Program; serve as Curator of at least one Longwood Core Collection and guide the process of Plant Collections Network  accreditation for the collection; and be responsible for the maintenance, propagation, trials, and evaluation of hardy research plants at the Longwood Research Nursery.

Qualifications include MS or PhD in horticulture, botany or related field with at least 2 years proven experience in applied ornamental plant breeding, extensive knowledge of ornamental plant taxonomy and propagation, good management, organizational, and observation skills with strong attention to detail, proven communication and presentation skills, ability to travel abroad, willingness to represent Longwood through membership in professional associations related to area of expertise . Plant mutagenesis experience, tissue culture experience, and familiarity with BG-Base a plus.

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Gardener in our Outdoor Display Gardens within our Horticulture Department.  This position assists with the maintenance of the permanent and seasonal displays in the Main Fountain Garden and its adjacent landscapes and for maintenance of the decomposed granite pathways garden-wide. This individual must be able to perform a full range of gardening and horticultural duties, including the planting of woody and herbaceous plants, mulching, and weed control.  Responsibilities include training and mentoring students and volunteers on practices required to create outdoor displays at a high aesthetic level.  Small equipment operator skills are required.  The work schedule includes weekend, evening and holiday work.

The preferred candidate will have a two year degree in Horticulture or closely related field and experience working in the field of horticulture.  Experience in the pruning of hedges, topiary and shrubs preferred.  Good organizational skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people and to complete work in a timely manner are required.  Must have a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license.

Human Resources Assistant

Longwood Gardens is looking for a full-time Human Resources Assistant to provide administrative and secretarial support to the Human Resources Division. This individual will apply administrative skills to handle guest communications (internal and external), schedule interviews and Divisional events, provide clerical support on projects, prepare presentations, and perform other general clerical duties. 

We are looking for an organized and detail oriented individual with a strong customer service approach who is able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality. The ideal candidate should have an Associates’ degree in Administration or a related field and have a minimum of three years of experience in a similar role. Prior HR experience is preferred. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include but are not limited to: excellent interpersonal and communication skills and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

HVAC/Environmental Controls Technician

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Environmental Controls Technician in the Facilities Management department. This individual will be responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and servicing all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and all electrical and various other control systems on site. The applicant must possess or be willing to obtain a Universal CFC Recovery Certification License. In addition to maintenance responsibilities this individual will provide support for various events and displays. Some overtime and off hours work including weekends and holidays will be required.

The applicant must have a minimum of 8 years of commercial or industrial experience and completion of a trade school or Dept of Labor & Industry registered apprenticeship program. Requirements include computer literacy and training or experience with HVAC systems, greenhouse controls, electrical systems and process instrumentation. Applicant will be required to operate a man lift and work at heights of 30 feet as well as be capable of lifting 50 pounds.
