Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time greenhouse grower. This individual will join 11 other growers, producing over 1000 different florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. In addition to the responsibilities typical of floricultural crop production, this position includes special emphasis on the training methods and unusual plants unique to Longwood Gardens, as well as: assisting other growers, ordering greenhouse supplies, and receiving and delivering plants. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty is required. Minimum requirements include: Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture with emphasis on floriculture; working knowledge of greenhouse production, environmental control and irrigation; or an Associate’s degree with two years of experience in greenhouse production. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and communication skills with experience working as part of a team. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license and a forklift operator’s training certificate.
Operational Services Assistant Manager
Longwood Gardens is seeking an Operational Services Assistant Manager to provide assistance in supervising the daily operations of our Operational Services division in accordance with our defined, guest-centric steps of service. This position is responsible for assisting with hiring and training staff, implementing work schedules and assignments, executing work order requests, and performing hands on janitorial duties as well as tasks in support of programming and special event needs. Administrative duties include scheduling staff, inventory control, uniform ordering/processing, and account budget management support. The work schedule will vary and includes weekends, evenings and holidays.
Candidates must have 3 years of experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a guest service oriented establishment. The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge and hands on experience in cleaning and sanitation practices, as well as strong guest service and hospitality skills. Must have or be willing to obtain certification to operate a forklift, box truck and cardboard bailer.
Administrative/ Project Coordinator
Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Administrative/Project Coordinator to provide highly skilled administrative and secretarial support to the Project Management Office and others within the Facilities Department. This individual will use administrative skills to handle internal and external communications, prepare presentations and executive correspondence, provide clerical support on projects, and perform other general clerical duties as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess an Associates’ degree in Administration or a related field and have a minimum of five years’ proven track record in executive administrative assistance. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include excellent interpersonal and communication skills; advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; the ability to type 60 wpm; strong planning and organizational skills. Prior administrative experience in the design and construction project industry and advanced knowledge of/experience with technology preferred.
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Gardener in our Outdoor Display Gardens within our Horticulture Department. This position assists with the maintenance of the permanent and seasonal displays in the Idea Garden and adjacent landscapes. This individual must be able to perform a full range of gardening and horticultural duties, including the installation and maintenance of seasonal and permanent displays, and support of all seasonal programming initiatives. Responsibilities include training and mentoring students and volunteers on practices required to create outdoor displays at a high aesthetic level. Small equipment operator skills are required. The work schedule includes weekend, evening and holiday work.
The preferred candidate will have a minimum of a two year degree in Horticulture or closely related field and experience working in the field of horticulture. Good organizational skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people and to complete work in a timely manner are required. Must have a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license.
HVAC/Environmental Controls Technician
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Environmental Controls Technician in the Facilities Management department. This individual will be responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and servicing all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and all electrical and various other control systems on site. The applicant must possess or be willing to obtain a Universal CFC Recovery Certification License. In addition to maintenance responsibilities this individual will provide support for various events and displays. Some overtime and off hours work including weekends and holidays will be required.
The applicant must have a minimum of 8 years of commercial or industrial experience and completion of a trade school or Dept of Labor & Industry registered apprenticeship program. Requirements include computer literacy and training or experience with HVAC systems, greenhouse controls, electrical systems and process instrumentation. Applicant will be required to operate a man lift and work at heights of 30 feet as well as be capable of lifting 50 pounds.
Longwood Gardens is seeking an Electronics Technician to perform installation, repairs and preventative maintenance of electrical control systems throughout the site, adhering to established safety and electrical regulations. This individual will provide, with minimal supervision, technical support for various programs, events and displays, and owner requirements and technical support for new construction projects. Emphasis will be on fountain and show controls, lighting, PLC, radio and fire alarm systems. The incumbent will operate, maintain and repair site power distribution system, lighting control and dimming system, all fountain, display and greenhouse control systems, all programming and display events, and any mobile equipment required to perform the job, as well as provide support for site radios and repeaters and for our Simplex fire alarm system. Weekend, holiday and off hours coverage is required including participation in a rotating second shift during the fountain season.
Successful completion of Electronics Trade School or an Electrical Apprenticeship program, a minimum of four years of experience as a Controls Technician, PLC experience, and a strong working knowledge of the NEC, NFPA 70E and OSHA 1910S Safety Standards is required. Familiarity with email, internet and Microsoft Office products is required. Electrical, HVAC, and Process Instrumentation experience preferred. The successful candidate will have strong trouble shooting skills, and an understanding of PLC wiring and logic diagrams/programming, lighting control systems, site radio communications infrastructure, licensing requirements, radio programming and repairs procedures, and fire alarm infrastructure and fiber optic communications systems.
Senior Administrative Assistant, Education Department
Longwood Gardens is seeking a Senior Administrative Assistant to provide highly skilled administrative and secretarial support to the Director of Education and other staff members within the Education Department. The Education Department includes 17 full-time staff, 32 part-time staff and 62 students, and is composed of six divisions: School (K-12) & Youth Programs, Domestic & International Studies, Longwood Graduate Program, Longwood Fellows Program, Continuing Education, and Library & Information Services. The Department is also the administrative home of Seed Your Future, a national initiative to promote horticulture and careers in horticulture.
The Senior Administrative Assistant will use administrative skills to handle guest communications (internal and external) including departmental webpages; registration for classes; special events planning; file management; report, correspondence and presentation preparation; and travel arrangements both domestically and internationally. In addition, this individual will serve as registrar for Education courses, workshops, seminars, special events, etc., working collaboratively, effectively, and efficiently in the use of Longwood’s point-of-sale system, student information system, and learning management system. Responsibilities also include managing all departmental special events, including but not limited to invitations, reservations, registrations, catering, and amenities, to a Longwood standard of excellence.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) in Administration, Hospitality, or related field and have a minimum of five years’ demonstrated excellence in administrative assistance, preferably in an academic setting. Registrar and event planning experience are desired. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include, but are not limited to: advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications with the ability to learn specialized software quickly and to navigate and search the Internet; the ability to type 60 wpm and to capture salient points of discussion during meetings; excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written; detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task; logical thinker with very strong planning and organizational skills; excellent command of grammar, punctuation, and spelling with editorial experience; superb etiquette, attention to aesthetics, and polished hosting skills to implement a high Longwood standard.
