Department Head of Facilities Management (Director of Facilities)
Longwood Gardens invites applicants for the position of Department Head of Facilities Management. The Department Head of Facilities Management is responsible for ensuring that all functions and activities related to the overall maintenance, operation, and construction of Longwood Gardens’ facilities complies with Longwood Gardens’ standards of excellence. Reporting to the Director (Chief Executive Officer), this position is a member of the senior management team and works closely with all Department Heads to develop, coordinate and implement strategies and plans. This individual will be responsible for a Department of 50 staff members who are tasked with a broad range of activities related to the Garden’s facilities, which include but are not limited to, construction project management, maintenance operations and planning, organizational programming and information technology.
We seek a proven leader in the facilities field whose background includes a successful track record of innovation and growth. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated history of surrounding him/herself with capable colleagues who have technical expertise and aptitude to carry out the strategic initiatives of the organization. In addition, the successful candidate will understand the culture of a nonprofit organization, such as Longwood, so as to be able to work effectively in conjunction with all stakeholders, internally and externally. This individual should have experience in designing and implementing a successful facility management program, that includes maintenance planning scheduling and seamless execution, creating key performance indicators, and strategic long-range infrastructure plans for the organization. In addition this individual should have broad experience with working with skilled craftsmen within the varied trades and a background in developing, training and motivating staff members at all levels.
This person must have at least ten years of management-level responsibility of professional staff supervision, in addition to project management and budgetary accountability for a large program. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required; an academic degree at the masters’ level is highly preferred. Leadership and recognition in professional membership organizations at the local, regional and national level is a plus.

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a Full Time Custodian (and multiple openings for part time custodians). Individuals in this position will perform various duties to ensure the cleanliness and excellent physical appearance of both the buildings and grounds. Selected applicants will also work with various departments to assist in the setup of functions and events. We are looking for candidates who have exceptional customer service, communication and hospitality skills. Work schedules will vary but may include weekends, evenings and holidays. Gardener - Natural Areas
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Gardener working in its Natural Lands Division of the Horticulture Department, helping to maintain Longwood’s natural resources in an ecologically sound manner.
Candidates must have a passion for natural land stewardship, and must be able to perform a full range of natural land management duties in a variety of terrain and weather conditions, including the planting of native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants; weeding, and managing invasive species using hand, equipment and herbicide techniques; using large equipment such as tractors, field mowers, skid steers, fork lifts and sprayers. Candidates may be asked to provide training and mentoring to students and volunteers on the best management practices required to maintain Longwood’s natural resources as outlined in Longwood’s Land Management Plan. Some weekend, evening and holiday work may be required.
Preferred candidates will have a two or four year degree in Biology, Ecology, Wildlife and/or Natural Resource Management, Horticulture, or related discipline. They will have good organizational and computer skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people, and complete work in a timely manner. Must have a valid driver’s license, equipment operation skills, and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license, and Pennsylvania Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License.
