Facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Planning Manager
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Facilities Operations, Maintenance & Planning Manager. This individual will provide leadership and technical expertise for the day-to-day implementation of policies, procedures and programs that will assure well-maintained buildings, placing maximum emphasis on positive response to the concerns and needs of the Guests, environmental health and safety and quality programs. The position plans, organizes, prioritizes, and directs facility maintenance and repair activities; schedules and coordinates all maintenance activities for vendors and internal staffing required for the buildings, property, infrastructure and operations. The incumbent provides guidance, project reviews and engineering analysis in areas where they are subject matter experts. A continuous focus on sustainability and carbon footprint reduction and initiatives is required. The position assumes overall departmental operational responsibilities when the Facilities Director is offsite or absent.
The preferred candidate will have a BS Degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience in multi-building/campus environmental, and/or property portfolio management experience. A secondary degree is a plus. Must have experience managing staff and hands on experience with project management, preventative maintenance, engineering maintenance and inventory controls. In addition strong technical and computer skills are required.
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time conservatory gardener to take charge of the Orchid Collection. This is the largest taxonomic collection at Longwood. The orchid grower will join 7 other gardeners who manage over 4000 taxa in 3.5 acres of conservatories that make up the centerpiece of Longwood's world-renowned displays. Responsibilities include all aspects of maintaining and displaying the 6,500 plants of 2,000 orchid taxa as well as assisting other gardeners, ordering supplies, and receiving and delivering plants. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty is required. Minimum requirements include: Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture with emphasis on conservatory collections; working knowledge of greenhouse technology, environmental control systems, and irrigation; and two years of experience managing plants in a greenhouse. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and communication skills with experience working as part of a team. Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator's license and a forklift operator's training certificate.
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Gardener in Outdoor Display Gardens of the Horticulture Department. The open position will focus on the installation and maintenance of the seasonal and permanent displays in the Visitor Center Parking Lot and the Main Fountain Garden.
Candidate must be able to perform a full range of gardening and horticultural duties, including the planting of woody and herbaceous plants, pruning and weed control. Candidate may be asked to provide training and mentoring to students and volunteers on the best management practices required to create outdoor displays with the high aesthetic level that Longwood is known for. Some weekend, evening and holiday work will be required.
Preferred candidate will have a two or four year degree in Horticulture or closely related field and experience working in the field of horticulture. They will have good organizational skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people, and complete work in a timely manner. Must have a valid driver’s license, equipment operation skills, and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicators license.

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Senior Gardener in the Outdoor Display Gardens. This individual must have experience with developing sophisticated seasonal planting designs and on-going maintenance of displays, to ensure that we continue to push the boundaries of excellence and innovation that are hallmarks of Longwood artful horticultural displays.
Candidate must have broad experience in gardening and horticultural duties, including knowledge and cultural requirements for a broad palette of woody and herbaceous plants. Candidate must have a proven track record of leadership related to implementation of best management practices required to create and maintain outdoor displays at the highest level of excellence; must be able to provide training and mentoring to students and volunteers on these practices. This individual will ensure environmentally sustainable horticultural practices are incorporated in both the design and maintenance of our displays. Some weekend, evening and holiday work will be required.
Preferred candidate will have a four year degree in Horticulture and a minimum of six years of experience working in a public garden. Candidate will have good organizational skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people, and complete work in a timely manner. Breeder and Curator of Plants
Longwood Gardens invites applicants for the position of Breeder and Curator of Plants in the Research Division of the Horticulture Department. Primary research responsibilities include leading Longwood’s breeding efforts and curation of the living collection.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Breeding and Research
• Lead Longwood’s Plant Breeding activities.
• Implement and carryout meaningful research projects and plant trials.
• Disseminate research results through scientific papers, popular articles and presentations.
• Lead Longwood’s historic Plant Exploration Program that already includes over 60 expeditions to more than 50 countries.
• Lead Longwood’s newly developed Plant Conservation Program. Develop program of significant prominence within the context of Longwood’s mission.
• Curate a highly diverse living collection of plants with visionary and strategic growth of the collection in accordance with Longwood’s Mission, Vision, Plant Collection Policy and Strategic Plan.
• Lead the systematic evaluation and nomenclatural accuracy of plants in the collections.
• Oversee the development of Longwood’s Core Collections and Curators of the individual Core Collections, while guiding the process of North American Plant Collection Consortium (NAPCC) accreditation.
Proven experience with ornamental plant breeding.
Extensive knowledge of ornamental plants and plant taxonomy.
Experience with plant conservation.
Proven record of leadership in the development of meaningful partnerships both nationally and internationally.
Willingness and ability to travel abroad and proven track record of plant exploration required. Strong knowledge of regulations related to national and international plant collection protocol; including but not limited CBD and USDA plant-import regulations.
Good organizational and observation skills with a strong attention to detail.
Proven communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences with varying levels of knowledge and experience.
Willingness to represent Longwood through membership in professional associations related to area of expertise.
MS or PhD in horticulture, botany or related field with 5 years of experience managing a living collection of plants.
Tissue culture experience and familiarity with BG-Base a plus.

Fleet and Equipment Mechanic
Longwood Gardens as an opening for a full time, Fleet and Equipment Mechanic. This individual will be performing repairs and preventative maintenance on all Longwood fleet vehicles and equipment. We are looking for someone to perform skilled mechanical duties, which include diagnosing and repairing, in addition to performing preventative maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment (500+ units). Vehicles and equipment include, but are not limited to tractors, pick-ups, diesel dump trucks (under and over 26,000 lbs), mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, blowers, snow equipment, small utility vehicles, excavators, backhoes, swap loaders and generators. This individual will also be involved with ordering parts and maintaining inventory, working with local parts vendors. Expertise in operating various “tools of the trade” such as ODB II scan tool, electronic wheel balancer, tire changing machine, air tools, vehicle lifts, multimeter, brake lathe, charging system tester, emission computer, etc. Individual will perform state safety and emissions inspections on fleet vehicles. Individual will also be required to train staff on pre-usage equipment inspection and general operation. Ability to operate a rollback truck to provide on-property recovery of vehicles required. This position also requires participation on off-hours snow operations mechanic on-duty coverage when required.
Preferred candidate will have a two degree from a technical school and a minimum of 5 years of job related experience. They will have good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of people. In addition applicants must be able to use a computer to enter repair orders, external dealer work, research equipment and use email. Flexibility to work after hours as necessary for fleet upkeep required. Must have a valid CDL Class A driver’s license, a DOT medical card, a forklift operator’s license, and PA State safety and emission inspection licenses.
Visitor Center Assistant Manager
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Visitor Center Assistant Manager. We are looking for an individual who will assist in managing the daily operations of the Visitor Center. Responsibilities will include hiring, managing and training staff as well as implementing work schedules and assignments. This individual will assist with crowd control during peak time periods and also handle guest issues that cannot be resolved by the staff. The schedule will vary but will include consistent evening and weekend work, as well as holidays. The ideal candidate will have strong customer service, supervisory and hospitality skills. Candidates should have 5 years of experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a retail or other customer service oriented establishment. In addition the individual must have excellent computer skills and be proficient in using a point-of-sale system.

They will join 11 other growers, producing over 1000 unique florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. Responsibilities include all aspects of floricultural crop production as well as: assisting other growers, ordering greenhouse supplies, and receiving and delivering plants. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty is required. Minimum requirements include: Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture with emphasis on floriculture; working knowledge of greenhouse production technology, environmental control systems and irrigation; and two years of experience in greenhouse production.
