HVAC/Environmental Controls Technician
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Environmental Controls Technician in the Facilities Management department. This individual will be responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and servicing all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and all electrical and various other control systems on site. The applicant must possess or be willing to obtain a Universal CFC Recovery Certification License. In addition to maintenance responsibilities this individual will provide support for various events and displays. Some overtime and off hours work including weekends and holidays will be required.
The applicant must have a minimum of 8 years of commercial or industrial experience and completion of a trade school or Dept of Labor & Industry registered apprenticeship program. Requirements include computer literacy and training or experience with HVAC systems, greenhouse controls, electrical systems and process instrumentation. Applicant will be required to operate a man lift and work at heights of 30 feet as well as be capable of lifting 50 pounds.

Groundskeeper – Turfgrass Management
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Groundskeeper in our Grounds Division within our Horticulture Department. This position assists with the maintenance of all turfgrass areas on the property along with pesticide applications, sodding, seeding, aeration along with leaf and snow removal. This individual must be able to perform a full range of groundskeeping and horticultural duties, including the planting of woody and herbaceous plants, and mulching. Responsibilities include training and mentoring students and volunteers on practices required to maintain turfgrass at a high aesthetic level. Small equipment operator skills are required. The work schedule includes weekend, evening and holiday work.
The preferred candidate will have a two year degree in Turfgrass Management or related field or two years’ experience in groundskeeping, golf course or estate maintenance. Good organizational skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people and to complete work in a timely manner are required. Must have a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license.
Longwood Gardens is seeking an Electronics Technician to perform installation, repairs and preventative maintenance of electrical control systems throughout the site, adhering to established safety and electrical regulations. This individual will provide, with minimal supervision, technical support for various programs, events and displays, and owner requirements and technical support for new construction projects. Emphasis will be on fountain and show controls, lighting, PLC, radio and fire alarm systems. The incumbent will operate, maintain and repair site power distribution system, lighting control and dimming system, all fountain, display and greenhouse control systems, all programming and display events, and any mobile equipment required to perform the job, as well as provide support for site radios and repeaters and for our Simplex fire alarm system. Weekend, holiday and off hours coverage is required including participation in a rotating second shift during the fountain season.
Successful completion of Electronics Trade School or an Electrical Apprenticeship program, a minimum of four years of experience as a Controls Technician, PLC experience, and a strong working knowledge of the NEC, NFPA 70E and OSHA 1910S Safety Standards is required. Familiarity with email, internet and Microsoft Office products is required. Electrical, HVAC, and Process Instrumentation experience preferred. The successful candidate will have strong trouble shooting skills, and an understanding of PLC wiring and logic diagrams/programming, lighting control systems, site radio communications infrastructure, licensing requirements, radio programming and repairs procedures, and fire alarm infrastructure and fiber optic communications systems.

Senior Administrative Assistant, Education Department
Longwood Gardens is seeking a Senior Administrative Assistant to provide highly skilled administrative and secretarial support to the Director of Education and other staff members within the Education Department. The Education Department includes 17 full-time staff, 32 part-time staff and 62 students, and is composed of six divisions: School (K-12) & Youth Programs, Domestic & International Studies, Longwood Graduate Program, Longwood Fellows Program, Continuing Education, and Library & Information Services. The Department is also the administrative home of Seed Your Future, a national initiative to promote horticulture and careers in horticulture.
The Senior Administrative Assistant will use administrative skills to handle guest communications (internal and external) including departmental webpages; registration for classes; special events planning; file management; report, correspondence and presentation preparation; and travel arrangements both domestically and internationally. In addition, this individual will serve as registrar for Education courses, workshops, seminars, special events, etc., working collaboratively, effectively, and efficiently in the use of Longwood’s point-of-sale system, student information system, and learning management system. Responsibilities also include managing all departmental special events, including but not limited to invitations, reservations, registrations, catering, and amenities, to a Longwood standard of excellence.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) in Administration, Hospitality, or related field and have a minimum of five years’ demonstrated excellence in administrative assistance, preferably in an academic setting. Registrar and event planning experience are desired. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include, but are not limited to: advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications with the ability to learn specialized software quickly and to navigate and search the Internet; the ability to type 60 wpm and to capture salient points of discussion during meetings; excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written; detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task; logical thinker with very strong planning and organizational skills; excellent command of grammar, punctuation, and spelling with editorial experience; superb etiquette, attention to aesthetics, and polished hosting skills to implement a high Longwood standard.
