Gardener

 Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Gardener in the Outdoor Display Division of the Horticulture Department. The open position will focus on the installation and maintenance of the seasonal and permanent displays in the Idea Garden and adjacent landscapes. Included in these responsibilities will be the vegetable and fruit production areas in the Idea Garden.

This individual must be able to perform a full range of gardening and horticultural duties, including the planting of woody and herbaceous plants, pruning and weed control. This person may be asked to provide training and mentoring to students and volunteers on the best management practices required to create outdoor displays with the high aesthetic level for which Longwood is known. Weekend, evening and holiday work is required.

The preferred candidate will have a two or four year degree in Horticulture or closely related field and experience working in the field of horticulture. Experience with ornamental vegetable and fruit production preferred. They will have good organizational skills, the ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people, and complete work in a timely manner. Must have a valid driver’s license, equipment operation skills, and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicators license.

Public Safety & Security Assistant Manager

 Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Public Safety & Security Assistant Manager. We are looking for an individual who will assist in managing the daily security and safety operations of the gardens. Responsibilities will include hiring, managing and training staff as well as implementing work schedules and assignments. This individual will assist with the efficient and effective operation of Public Safety, Security and Mailroom services. In addition he/she will coordinate activities regarding the security and safety of Longwood Gardens’ guests, employees and properties. The schedule will vary but will include consistent evening and weekend work, as well as holidays and special events. The ideal candidate will have strong managerial skills which should include budget preparation, negotiation, collaboration, human resource management, project management and special events emergency operations planning. In addition this individual should have excellent communication, customer service and conflict resolution skills. An understanding of security and life-safety systems, technologies and central station operations is a must.

Candidates should possess a degree in Public Safety and Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, Police Science, or similar major and have 5 years of experience in a managerial capacity, preferably in security, law enforcement or other customer service oriented establishment. Senior Greenhouse Grower – Seasonal Crops

 Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time greenhouse grower. They will join 11 other growers, producing over 1000 unique florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. This position is located adjacent to our Nursery Production Site. This candidate will be responsible for growing a broad range of seasonal herbaceous crops to the highest standards. Responsibilities will include all aspects of floricultural crop production including: transplanting, potting, repotting, staking, tying, grooming plants, watering, and fertilizing. They will need to provide hands-on support as well as provide direction and training to students, seasonal employees, and volunteers on these practices. Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management is necessary, as this person will be responsible for monitoring and implementing pest control measures on the crops they grow as part of a comprehensive IPM program. This person must be able to work independently and as part of teams, receiving and delivering plants and similar activities. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty are required. 

Minimum requirements include: BSc degree in horticulture with emphasis on floriculture plus 4 years experience showing: working knowledge of greenhouse production technology, environmental control systems and irrigation; and general greenhouse flowering crop production. Associates degree would be acceptable from candidates with greater years of experience. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and problem solving skills and experience indicating a level of mechanical aptitude. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license and a forklift operator’s training certificate.

Greenhouse Grower

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time greenhouse grower. They will join 11 other growers, producing over 1000 unique florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. This is a unique/hands-on position where the grower’s primary responsibility will be assisting our Chrysanthemum Specialist in growing the largest Thousand Bloom Mum in North America, as well as growing several other types of specialty mums that are grown for Longwood’s Chrysanthemum Festival. This position will also assist other growers with all aspects of crop production including: transplanting, potting, repotting, staking, tying, grooming plants, watering, fertilizing , and receiving and delivering plant material. At times, they will move around within other areas of Greenhouse Production, enabling them to become well versed in all aspects of Longwood’s high standards for producing beautiful plants for our displays. They will also be required to cover for other full time growers in their absence. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty is required. Minimum requirements include: Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture with emphasis on floriculture; working knowledge of greenhouse production, environmental control and irrigation; or an Associate’s degree with two years of experience in greenhouse production. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and problem solving skills. They will need to be able to work within a team atmosphere to accomplish tasks as well as be able to work independently. At times this person will be required to supervise and mentor students, seasonal employees, and volunteers in proper greenhouse growing techniques. Fleet and Equipment Mechanic

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time, Fleet and Equipment Mechanic. This individual will be performing repairs and preventative maintenance on all Longwood fleet vehicles and equipment. We are looking for someone to perform skilled mechanical duties, which include diagnosing and repairing, in addition to performing preventative maintenance on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment (500+ units). Size of equipment ranges from small engine work on landscape equipment all the way to 33,000 lbs. GVW diesel trucks. This individual will also be involved with ordering parts and maintaining inventory, working with local parts vendors. Expertise in operating various “tools of the trade” such as ODB II scan tool, electronic wheel balancer, tire changing machine, air tools, vehicle lifts, multimeter, brake lathe, charging system tester, emission computer, etc. Individual will perform state safety and emissions inspections on fleet vehicles. Individual will also be required to train staff on pre-usage equipment inspection and general operation. Ability to operate a rollback truck to provide on-property recovery of vehicles required. This position also requires participation on off-hours snow operations mechanic on-duty coverage when required.

Preferred candidate will have a two year degree from a technical school and a minimum of 5 years of job related experience. They will have good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of people. In addition applicants must be able to use a computer to enter repair orders, external dealer work, research equipment and use email. Flexibility to work after hours as necessary for fleet upkeep required. Operational Services Assistant Manager

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Operational Services Assistant Manager. We are looking for an individual who will assist in supervising the daily operations of the Operational Services Division.  Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, assisting with hiring and training staff as well as implementing work schedules and assignments.  This individual will also perform hands on work order requests and janitorial duties.  The schedule will vary but will include evening and weekend work, as well as holidays. The ideal candidate should have advanced knowledge and hands on experience of cleaning and sanitation practices, as well as strong customer service and hospitality skills.  Candidates should have 3 years of experience in a supervisory capacity, preferably in a customer service oriented establishment.  In addition the individual must be willing and able to receive certification to operate the forklift, box truck and cardboard bailer.

Night Gardener - 3rd Shift

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time 3rd shift Night Gardener. The Night Gardener has primary responsibility for providing 24 hour environmental control, horticulture oversight, and physical plant monitoring for the entire property when other Horticulture and Facilities staff are not present. Coordinates and communicates environmental control and other physical plant needs for events between Guest Services and Horticulture/Facilities Team Members. This position is critical to Longwood Gardens as it ensures constant oversight – safeguarding the Conservatories, greenhouse growing facilities, and critical pieces of the display and the entire grounds.

Must have a minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent. Preferred experience of two years combined employment in at least two of the following: hands-on experience in greenhouse management and control systems, environmental monitoring systems, automated and non-automated security monitoring, or a mechanical trade. Good written and oral communication skills and knowledge of Microsoft office products are critical. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to get a DOT physical qualification card and fork lift certification. Weekend and holiday work is required.
