Longwood employs seasonal employees in all areas of the Gardens. Hours vary by position. All seasonal employees receive free access to the Gardens, a discount at the Gardens Shop, and a discount at the Terrace Restaurant cafeteria when working.

Security Officer

The seasonal Security Officer will be responsible for ensuring the security and safety of guests, employees, and the properties at Longwood Gardens.  Individuals must have the personality and ability to deal well with the public and fellow employees.  Previous security experience preferred. This position requires the ability to work a flexible work schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Housekeeping

Longwood Gardens has seasonal openings for housekeeping staff. Individuals in this position will perform various duties to ensure the cleanliness and excellent physical appearance of both the buildings and grounds. Selected applicants will also work with various departments to assist in the setup of functions and events. We are looking for candidates who have exceptional customer service, communication and hospitality skills. Work schedules will vary but may include weekends, evenings and holidays. Guest Services Associate

The seasonal Guest Services Associate will provide various duties related to guest relations and being a Host at Longwood Gardens.  Duties will include, but are not limited to, greeting guests, assisting with set-up of programs and daily operational needs, as well as providing crowd control during peak visitation and special events. We are looking for candidates who have exceptional guest service, communication and hospitality skills.  This position requires walking outdoors, lifting light loads, and working in all weather conditions.  The work schedule includes weekends, holidays, and evenings.

Performance Technician

The seasonal Performance Technician will be responsible for the set-up, operation, and strike of sound and lighting systems in a variety of indoor and outdoor venues, as directed by supervisor and internal and external clients. Additional duties will include standard stage crew jobs such as moving heavy equipment, building and striking temporary stages, and some equipment maintenance. We are looking for candidates with experience with computerized lighting systems, small and medium sized sound reinforcement systems (12-48 channels), and computer technologies used for public presentations. The work schedule includes weekends, evenings and holidays. 

Outdoor Display

Seasonal employees working in the Outdoor Display Division have the opportunity to work with staff gardeners in the various outdoor gardens areas, assisting with a variety of tasks.  These may include planting, weeding, mulching, watering, pruning, deadheading and general garden maintenance.  Working as a seasonal employee in Outdoor Display is an excellent way to gain or improve hands-on gardening knowledge and experience as you work with professional gardeners in an exceptional display garden.  Applicants with prior horticultural knowledge or experience are preferred, and we will also train motivated individuals. 

To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.

Research

Seasonal employees working in the Research Division will perform numerous outdoor, greenhouse and laboratory tasks under the direction of several greenhouse, nursery, and research staff. Tasks include but are not limited to watering, fertilizing, and maintenance of plants, laboratory work, plant breeding, tissue culture, mulching and various research activities. Prior horticultural experience and/or knowledge preferred. The term for these positions varies.

To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.

Floriculture

Seasonal employees working in Floriculture will work with staff in various locations throughout the gardens, including Indoor Display, Nursery, or Greenhouse Production.  Seasonals in our Floriculture Division will perform a variety of tasks under the direction of our gardeners and growers, as part of a diverse team of staff, students and volunteers. Tasks include but are not limited to moving, staking, tying, potting, watering, fertilizing, grooming, pinching, and pruning of containerized plants as they are prepared for display throughout our gardens. They will also work around and sometimes with pot filling machines, fork lifts, trucks, and utility vehicles. This work is performed in our Conservatory, greenhouses or at our outdoor summer growing locations. Prior horticultural experience and/or knowledge preferred. The work schedule is weekdays only; the term for these positions varies.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

Seasonal employees in IPM are responsible for activities associated with insects, disease and other biological issues across the conservatories, greenhouses and outdoor areas of Longwood Gardens.  This work includes scouting for insects and disease, removing algae and invasive species from lakes and ponds, laboratory work and other pest management activities. Ability to work in diverse weather and environmental conditions are required. PA Pesticide Applicator’s license is a plus.

Nursery Woody Plant Production

Seasonal employees working at the nursery will perform numerous manual tasks, working under the direction of the nursery gardeners. Tasks include but are not limited to watering, fertilizing, and maintenance of plants, mulching and various nursery activities. This work is performed at the outdoor growing locations of our behind the scenes nursery. They will also work around and sometimes with tree spades, fork lifts, trucks, and utility vehicles. Working as a seasonal employee at the nursery is an excellent way to gain or improve hands-on gardening knowledge and experience as you work with container plants and field grown trees and shrubs.  Applicants with prior horticultural knowledge or experience are preferred, and we will also train motivated individuals.

Research Assistant - Seasonal  - Plant Collection and Preservation

Seasonal employees in research will work closely with our Research Specialist in collecting plant material and processing it for scientific research. The ability to work in diverse conditions as found in greenhouses and the natural land areas of southeastern Pennsylvania is essential, as is an attention to detail, an understanding of laboratory etiquette, and an interest in plant science.  The work schedule will include and an average of four days per week, with some five day weeks during peak season, and include occasional weekends and evenings. Must have a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Natural Lands

Seasonal employees working in the Natural Lands Division have the opportunity to work with staff in the various natural habitats and plant communities within our 700+ acres of natural lands, including meadows, woodlands, and wetlands, including the award-winning 86-acre Meadow Garden, assisting with a variety of tasks.  These duties may include planting, weeding, invasive species removal, wildlife management support activities, mulching, watering, pruning, and general Natural Area’s maintenance.  Working as a seasonal employee in Natural Lands is an excellent way to gain or improve hands-on ecological and native plant knowledge and experience as you work with our professional staff in a variety of settings.  Applicants with prior land management, and/or horticultural knowledge or experience are preferred, and we will also train motivated individuals.

Civil Division

Seasonal employees in the Civil Division must have a good work ethic and a willingness to perform various tasks.  Duties include water fountain debris removal, hand digging, lifting and hauling of various heavy objects and material, assisting masons and excavation operators where needed. 

To operate vehicles and equipment, applicants must be at least eighteen years old with a valid driver’s license.

Electrical Division

The seasonal worker in the Electrical Division must have a good work ethic and the ability to perform various tasks in a safe manner. Duties of the seasonal worker in this area include assisting Electricians in daily duties, minor Electrical Shop tasks, shop inventory, shop cleanup. Candidate must be capable of lifting at least 50 lbs and must be able to climb ladders.
