Explore the world of traditional woody plants including flowering trees, shrubs, and conifers while learning cultural information about these structural plantings and their use in the landscape. In this dynamic course, you’ll expand your plant knowledge with live, online sessions and make use of photo-stories, video presentations, online fact pages, an e-book, flashcards, vocabulary games, mystery plants, and hundreds of beautiful images. You will learn the key identifying characteristics of these plants and best practices in their use and care. If you’ve ever wanted to hone your skills in managing the woody plants in your backyard, this is the course for you.

You will be able to take the skills you learn to identify these plants and how to use them in the landscape, and gain skills to identify new plants you'll encounter outside this class.

Set your own schedule, and work at your own pace! You can participate anywhere that you have access to the internet, and you will have access to the course resources 24/7 for the entire six weeks of the class and for six months after the course ends. There are no required presentations or any set times that you will need to meet online. There will be at least two scheduled live sessions, but they will be recorded and available to access at any time. For an additional fee, you may choose to purchase an optional print copy of the online e-book that is included with the course.

This course counts as a three-week elective toward a Certificate in Ornamental Horticulture or Landscape Design.

This program is in partnership with North Carolina State University
