Engaging with nature provides many benefits for children, such as bolstering physical and mental health, building confidence, and igniting their imaginations. Winter provides plenty of opportunities to connect children with nature—even if they’re doing so indoors during the chilly months!
To help families explore the beauty of winter and bring nature home, Longwood Gardens has developed this Winter Discovery Box designed for children ages 6 to 12. This seasonal discovery box includes indoor and outdoor activities with easy-to-follow instructions and all materials to provide your children with hours of fun. Discover the secrets of the natural world while engaging in nature-based, hands-on projects and experiments.
Unbox the Benefits of Nature
Explore the beauty of winter—from the comfort of home—with a Winter Discovery Box, filled with all the materials you’ll need for five fun activities designed for children ages 6–12.
•Experiment with frozen flower cubes to compare melting times indoors and outdoors.
•Grow hydroponic herbs on the windowsill.
•Get outside and recreate a landscape with colored pencils on black canvas for a seasonal display.
•Design a retro tinsel tree adorned with jingle bells to brighten up the indoors.
•Explore nature using the ruler, compass, magnifying glass, pencil, and nature journal this winter season.
