Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Arborist. Candidates must have the skill and ability to apply proper pruning techniques, execute removals and practice all aspects of tree care as outlined in the ANSI A300 standards while complying with ANSI Z133 safety protocols. Candidates should have experience operating aerial lift trucks, chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and other small equipment used in arboriculture. A strong knowledge of plant health care is a plus. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are a must. Knowledge of MS Office (including Outlook, Excel, and Word) and general computer literacy is desired. Candidates should have an Associates degree or higher in a Forestry or similar field with a minimum of 3 years climbing experience as an arborist. An ISA Certified Arborist is preferred and uncertified applicants will be expected to obtain ISA certification within the first year. Candidates must have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator License and Pennsylvania CDL Class B driver’s license within 6 months of employment.
Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Assistant Project Manager to provide highly skilled technical and administrative support to the Project Management Office and others within the Facilities Department. This individual will use project management skills to support the project managers with all phases and aspects of a project including meeting coordination and preparing meeting minutes, issuing project performance reports, communicating internally and externally with consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders, and conducting frequent site visits to ensure compliance with owner's project requirements and Longwood's safety policies.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or a related field and have a minimum of two to five years' proven track record in project management. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong planning and organizational skills, advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and experience using AutoCAD or similar computer aided design software. This position requires the ability to work outside in all weather conditions, enter confined spaces, stand and sit for extended periods, work on construction sites and wear required PPE.
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a Boiler Operator in the Facilities Management department. The position will provide hands on technical expertise for day-to-day operations and maintenance of the central heating plant, auxiliary components, and satellite boilers throughout the gardens on a rotating shift schedule maintaining related equipment in a safe, cost effective manner while ensuring good housekeeping and an excellent guest experience. The position plans, organizes, orders materials, and prioritizes individual work orders assigned. These systems will be operated 24 x 7 days a week and require that the Operator work weekends and nights without supervision. Physical requirements of this position include the ability to reach and lift, climb and balance, lift and move up to fifty pounds, and ascend/descend ladders and stairs.
Candidates must have a minimum of 8 years of commercial or industrial experience and completion of a trade school or Dept of Labor & Industry registered apprenticeship program or state issued boiler license. Requirements include computer literacy, training or experience with Boiler systems and process instrumentation, and a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license with the ability to operate a vehicle. The successful candidate will have experience and knowledge of Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space Entry, Respirator use, Fall Protection, etc. and work safety best practices.
Longwood Gardens seeks a Horticulturist to join the highly skilled Outdoor Landscape team of horticulture professionals that manage Longwood’s world-renown outdoor gardens and landscapes including the Hillside Garden, the newly revitalized Main Fountain Garden, and adjacent landscapes.
We seek an experienced individual that can perform a full range of gardening and horticultural duties including pruning and seasonal maintenance in a perennial landscape. The successful candidate will have strength in garden design and knowledge of garden-worthy plants from around the world. The Hillside Garden exhibits all the garden conditions from sun to shade, and includes geophytes, woodland to sun-loving perennials, and woody plants. This individual should have the desire to broaden their plant knowledge and practical methods through hands-on experience and continuing education and possess an interest in overall professional development. We foster a team approach and the successful candidate must be willing to support activities and events in Outdoor Landscape as well as their colleagues across the organization. Responsibilities include training and mentoring students and volunteers on practices required to create and maintain the outdoor landscapes to a high level of horticultural excellence.
A Bachelor of Science Degree in horticulture with an emphasis in ornamental horticulture is preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license and have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license, forklift operator’s training certificate, and aerial lift training. The position requires small equipment operator skills and has a work schedule that includes weekend, evening and holiday work. This position requires familiarity with integrated pest management, bending, stooping, the ability to lift at least 50 pounds, and working from ladders & aerial lifts.

Longwood Gardens is seeking a full time Nursery Manager. This individual will provide primary leadership for growing and/or procuring woody plants needed for the entire property. Reporting to the Director of Grounds, the Nursery Manager will be responsible for ensuring the nursery is maintained to the highest standards of excellence, and that best management practices are applied in all aspects of nursery woody plant operations. We seek a Nursery Manager who has the ability to work in a fast-paced and collaborative environment to lead two full-time and one-part-time nursery staff, as well as numerous students. This individual will proactively manage and implement the Specimen Tree Replacement Plan which includes propagation of a wide range of tree species. Baseline requirements include formal training in Horticulture with emphasis in Nursery Management or a related field, with a minimum of five years of experience in leading nursery operations. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a broad knowledge of woody plants, including culture and propagation, especially those plants hardy in Zone 6b, as well as a proven track record in procuring plants from a variety of sources. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a DOT physical qualification card for operating vehicles weighing over 11,000 pounds, a Pennsylvania commercial pesticide applicator’s license and a forklift operator’s training certificate. This position requires a thorough operational knowledge of nursery equipment and the Nursery ANSI Z60.1 standards.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leadership in the field and with leading teams, as well as demonstrated abilities in managerial administrative duties including coordinating work schedules, record-keeping and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications. Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal, professional writing and public speaking skills are preferred. Some weekend and holiday work required.
Longwood Gardens is seeking a Plumber to provide hands on technical expertise for day-to-day operations and maintenance of fluid moving equipment, components, and piping in a safe, cost effective manner while ensuring good housekeeping and an excellent guest experience. This position plans, organizes, orders materials and prioritizes individual work orders assigned; performs day-to-day mechanical maintenance, repairs and system checks to diagnosis problems on various systems; performs administrative work activities; ensures a broad range of building material functions as designed with integrated components that may be historic. This is predominately a second shift position which may be subject to after-hour call out for emergency work and rotation on an operations standby roster.
High School diploma/GED and successful completion of an apprenticeship program (such as pipe fitter, plumber, millwright) or five years demonstrated field experience is required. Driver’s license is required; Master Plumber’s license, Journeyman card, and Water, Waste Water Operator knowledge are desirable. Knowledgeable of BOCA National Mechanical Code, National Plumbing Code, ability to read P&ID, construction as built drawings, and building prints. This individual must have the demonstrated ability to operate the tools of the trade and to work with other trades, be familiar with email, internet and Microsoft Office products, and possess strong decision making, communication, analytical, problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
Longwood Gardens is seeking a self-motivated, dynamic individual for the position of Research Specialist in the Research and Conservation Division of our Horticulture Department. Primary research responsibilities include management of the Longwood Research Nursery and Plant Evaluation Program. Research responsibilities include: implementing, analyzing and disseminating meaningful research projects related to plant culture, breeding and conservation, and management of a Plant Evaluation and Trials Program (Hardy and non-hardy plants). Research nursery management and collections curation responsibilities include: managing of all aspects of Longwood Gardens 5-acre Research Nursery and serving as Curator of at least one Longwood Core Collection including guiding the process of Plant Collections Network accreditation for the collection.
Qualifications include a BS, MS or PhD degree in horticulture, botany or related field with at least 2 years of nursery, greenhouse or plant evaluation and trials experience; extensive knowledge of ornamental plant taxonomy, propagation and culture; excellent management, organizational, observation and critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail; and proven written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences with varying levels of knowledge and experience. We also require the willingness and ability to represent Longwood through membership in professional associations and to travel abroad and participate in plant exploration. A valid driver’s license is required; experience with BG-Base or another plant records database systems is a plus.
