Longwood Gardens is looking for a full-time Administrative/Project Coordinator to provide highly skilled administrative and secretarial support to the Project Management Office and others within the Facilities Department. This individual will use administrative and project coordination skills to handle internal and external communications, prepare presentations and executive correspondence, project cost tracking and reports, and perform other general clerical duties as needed.
The ideal candidate will possess an Associates’ degree in Administration or a related field and have a minimum of five years’ proven track record in project coordination and administrative assistance. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include excellent interpersonal and communication skills; advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; the ability to type 60 wpm; strong planning and organizational skills. Prior administrative experience in the design and construction project industry and advanced knowledge of/experience with technology preferred.
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Arborist. Candidates must have the skill and ability to apply proper pruning techniques, execute removals and practice all aspects of tree care as outlined in the ANSI A300 standards while complying with ANSI Z133 safety protocols. Candidates should have experience operating aerial lift trucks, chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, and other small equipment used in arboriculture. A strong knowledge of plant health care is a plus. Effective communication skills, both oral and written, are a must. Knowledge of MS Office (including Outlook, Excel, and Word) and general computer literacy is desired. Candidates should have an Associates degree or higher in a Forestry or similar field with a minimum of 3 years climbing experience as an arborist. An ISA Certified Arborist is preferred and uncertified applicants will be expected to obtain ISA certification within the first year. Candidates must have or be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator License and Pennsylvania CDL Class B driver’s license within 6 months of employment.

Longwood Gardens is seeking an Electrician to perform installation, repairs and preventative maintenance of electrical control systems throughout the site, while adhering to established safety and electrical regulations. This position will provide hands on technical expertise for day-to-day operations and maintenance of electrical equipment and controls in a safe, cost effective manner while ensuring good housekeeping and an excellent guest experience. This position plans, organizes, orders materials, and prioritizes individual work orders assigned; performs day-to-day electrical maintenance, repairs, and system checks to diagnosis problems on various systems; performs administrative work activities; ensures a broad range of building material functions as designed with integrated components that may be historic. This is predominately a second shift position which may be subject to after-hour call out for emergency work and rotation on an operations standby roster.
High School diploma/GED and successful completion of an apprenticeship program or four years demonstrated field experience is required. Driver’s license is required; electrical license is desirable. Must have knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, and OSHA 1910S Safety Standards, ability to read P&ID, construction as-built drawings, and building prints. This individual must have the demonstrated ability to operate the tools of the trade and to work with other trades, be familiar with email, internet and Microsoft Office products, and possess strong decision making, communication, analytical, problem solving and trouble shooting skills.
Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full time Greenhouse Grower. They will join 12 other growers, producing over 1000 unique florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays. This position is located at our Nursery Production growing area. This candidate will be responsible for growing a broad range of herbaceous plant material to the highest standards. Responsibilities will include all aspects of floricultural crop production including: transplanting, potting, repotting, staking, tying, grooming plants, watering, and fertilizing. They will need to provide hands-on support as well as provide direction and training to students, seasonal employees, and volunteers on these practices. Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management is necessary, as this person will be responsible for all facets of IPM on the crops they grow. This person must be able to work independently as well as part of teams receiving and delivering plants and similar activities. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty are required.
Minimum requirements include: BS degree in horticulture with emphasis on floriculture plus 4 years’ experience showing: working knowledge of greenhouse production technology, environmental control systems and irrigation; and general greenhouse flowering crop production. Associates degree would be acceptable from candidates with greater years of experience. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and problem solving skills and experience indicating a level of mechanical aptitude. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license and a forklift operator’s training certificate.
Longwood Gardens is seeking a Horticulture Contract Manager with proven leadership to ensure the efficient and effective performance of contractors engaged by the Horticulture Department on Longwood property. The Horticulture Contract Manager will provide comprehensive contract management and oversight of contractors working across the department, to guide a diverse range of contractors supporting horticulture operations. The Horticulture Department consists of 85 full-time staff and 42 part-time staff, as well as numerous volunteers and students.
We seek an individual who has demonstrated the ability to work in a fast-paced, highly creative and collaborative environment as a contract manager across a multidisciplinary organization. The Horticulture Contract Manager will support the Vice President of Horticulture and the Horticulture Directors by providing guidance and holding contractors accountable, with a goal of creating and maintaining Longwood’s indoor and outdoor gardens, landscapes, and perimeter lands to the highest aesthetic standards. Excellent communication skills and organize contractual work and experience in managing budgets and projects is required.
Formal training in Horticulture, Landscape Contract Management or related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in Horticulture is required, with a minimum of 3 years in a contract management capacity. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a strong experience in contract management and landscape contractor oversight. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include excellent verbal communication, strong organizational and prioritization skills and the ability to manage contractors while providing guidance. Contract and project management skills are a must, as is proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Longwood Gardens is seeking a Membership Associate with prior experience supporting a large membership or development organization. This position is an integral part of our Membership Division and manages our member database, communicates regularly with our members, oversees the fulfillment process, and performs other administrative functions such as managing the member volunteer team and assisting in writing/reviewing member communications.
Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree (or 3 to 5 years of equivalent experience) with 1 to 3 years of experience in the membership/development/fundraising field. Preferred candidates will have experience working with membership, development, or fundraising programs, knowledge of CRM software such as Raiser’s Edge, strong Microsoft Office skills including Excel and Word, and will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Longwood Gardens is seeking a self-motivated, dynamic individual for the position of Research Specialist in the Research and Conservation Division of our Horticulture Department. Primary research responsibilities include management of the Longwood Research Nursery and Plant Evaluation Program. Research responsibilities include: implementing, analyzing and disseminating meaningful research projects related to plant culture, breeding and conservation, and management of a Plant Evaluation and Trials Program (Hardy and non-hardy plants). Research nursery management and collections curation responsibilities include: managing of all aspects of Longwood Gardens 5-acre Research Nursery and serving as Curator of at least one Longwood Core Collection including guiding the process of Plant Collections Network accreditation for the collection.
Qualifications include a BS, MS or PhD degree in horticulture, botany or related field with at least 2 years of nursery, greenhouse or plant evaluation and trials experience; extensive knowledge of ornamental plant taxonomy, propagation and culture; excellent management, organizational, observation and critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail; and proven written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences with varying levels of knowledge and experience. We also require the willingness and ability to represent Longwood through membership in professional associations and to travel abroad and participate in plant exploration. A valid driver’s license is required; experience with BG-Base or another plant records database systems is a plus.
