Assistant Project Manager

Longwood Gardens is seeking a full-time Assistant Project Manager to provide highly skilled technical and administrative support to the Project Management Office and others within the Facilities Department. This individual will use project management skills to support the project managers with all phases and aspects of a project including meeting coordination and preparing meeting minutes, issuing project performance reports, communicating internally and externally with consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders, and conducting frequent site visits to ensure compliance with owner's project requirements and Longwood's safety policies.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture or a related field and have a minimum of two to five years' proven track record in project management. Baseline knowledge and skills for the position include excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong planning and organizational skills, advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and experience using AutoCAD or similar computer aided design software. This position requires the ability to work outside in all weather conditions, enter confined spaces, stand and sit for extended periods, work on construction sites and wear required PPE.

Boiler Operator

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a Boiler Operator in the Facilities Management department. The position will provide hands on technical expertise for day-to-day operations and maintenance of the central heating plant, auxiliary components, and satellite boilers throughout the gardens on a rotating shift schedule maintaining related equipment in a safe, cost effective manner while ensuring good housekeeping and an excellent guest experience. The position plans, organizes, orders materials, and prioritizes individual work orders assigned. These systems will be operated 24 x 7 days a week and require that the Operator work weekends and nights without supervision. Physical requirements of this position include the ability to reach and lift, climb and balance, lift and move up to fifty pounds, and ascend/descend ladders and stairs.

Candidates must have a minimum of 8 years of commercial or industrial experience and completion of a trade school or Dept of Labor & Industry registered apprenticeship program or state issued boiler license. Requirements include computer literacy, training or experience with Boiler systems and process instrumentation, and a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license with the ability to operate a vehicle. The successful candidate will have experience and knowledge of Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space Entry, Respirator use, Fall Protection, etc. and work safety best practices.

Floriculture Propagator/Grower

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time propagator/greenhouse grower. They will join 11 other growers, producing almost 1400 unique florist crops, in 4.5 acres of greenhouses and container fields, used to create Longwood’s world-renown displays.

Internationally recognized for innovative, and dynamic horticultural displays, our property consists of over 1100 acres, both public and non-public. In addition to the greenhouses, the public gardens consist of indoor and outdoor gardens and landscapes designed by Longwood’s Founder Pierre S. du Pont and some of the greatest landscape and garden designers of the 20th and 21st centuries. Longwood also has considerable natural lands and perimeter properties.

This is a unique hands-on position requiring attention to detail. This grower will oversee vegetative and seed propagation for the Floriculture team including about 650 crop varieties as well as crop production in 6,000 square feet of state-of-the-art greenhouses. This grower will be involved in all aspects of propagation and crop production including: sowing seeds, collecting and sticking cuttings, transplanting, potting, repotting, staking, tying, grooming, watering, fertilizing, pest management, setting mist and environmental control parameters, and receiving and delivering plant material. Periodic weekend, holiday, and evening duty is required.

Minimum requirements include: a two-year or four-year post-secondary degree in Horticulture with emphasis on Floriculture. Ideal candidates will have strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, as well as demonstrated experience working proactively to meet deadlines. They will be equally effective working as part of a team or independently and will supervise and mentor students, seasonal employees, and volunteers in proper greenhouse propagation and growing techniques on a regular basis. A proven track record in propagating a broad group of floriculture crops preferred. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator’s license and a forklift operator’s training certificate.

Maintenance Planning Assistant

Longwood Gardens is seeking a Maintenance Planning Assistant. This position provides guidance and coordinates the Help Desk activities for the Facilities Department through various CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) for the day-to-day implementation of work activities and work orders. Responsibilities include assisting with procedures that will ensure well-maintained buildings and programs, placing significant emphasis on timely responses to routine and urgent work orders, and dispatching trades to address the concerns and needs of the guests, environmental health and safety, and quality programs. The position assists in the planning, organizing, and prioritizing Facilities work.
Minimum qualifications include a High School diploma/GED minimum with 2 years of experience communicating with trades. Bachelor’s degree in computer business applications or related field of study with five years of experience is preferred. The successful candidate will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Night Gardener

Longwood Gardens has an opening for a full-time Night Gardener. Longwood is open every day of the year, and round the clock environmental systems monitoring is critical. Schedule for this position is generally midnight – 10:00am, and includes weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Night Gardener has primary responsibility for providing oversight for the Horticulture team during “off-hours.” Primary responsibilities include monitoring weather conditions, critical greenhouse environmental systems, as well as the physical plant. Coordinates and adjust controls and physical plant environments to ensure seamless operations and reduced risk to conservatories, greenhouses, buildings and Longwood property.

Must have a minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent. Preferred experience of two years combined employment in at least two of the following: hands-on experience in greenhouse management and control systems, environmental monitoring systems, automated and non-automated security monitoring, or a mechanical trade. Prior experience with, and clear evidence of, critical thinking and sound decision making skills essential. Strong written and oral communication skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office products required. Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain a DOT physical qualification card and fork lift certification. Weekend and holiday work is required.

Plumber/Maintenance Mechanic

Longwood Gardens is seeking a Plumber to provide hands on technical expertise for day-to-day operations and maintenance of fluid moving equipment, components, and piping in a safe, cost effective manner while ensuring good housekeeping and an excellent guest experience. This position plans, organizes, orders materials and prioritizes individual work orders assigned; performs day-to-day mechanical maintenance, repairs and system checks to diagnosis problems on various systems; performs administrative work activities; ensures a broad range of building material functions as designed with integrated components that may be historic. This is predominately a second shift position which may be subject to after-hour call out for emergency work and rotation on an operations standby roster.

High School diploma/GED and successful completion of an apprenticeship program (such as pipe fitter, plumber, millwright) or five years demonstrated field experience is required. Driver’s license is required; Master Plumber’s license, Journeyman card, and Water, Waste Water Operator knowledge are desirable. Knowledgeable of BOCA National Mechanical Code, National Plumbing Code, ability to read P&ID, construction as built drawings, and building prints. This individual must have the demonstrated ability to operate the tools of the trade and to work with other trades, be familiar with email, internet and Microsoft Office products, and possess strong decision making, communication, analytical, problem solving and trouble shooting skills.

Research Specialist

Longwood Gardens is seeking a self-motivated, dynamic individual for the position of Research Specialist in the Research and Conservation Division of our Horticulture Department. Primary research responsibilities include management of the Longwood Research Nursery and Plant Evaluation Program. Research responsibilities include: implementing, analyzing and disseminating meaningful research projects related to plant culture, breeding and conservation, and management of a Plant Evaluation and Trials Program (Hardy and non-hardy plants). Research nursery management and collections curation responsibilities include: managing of all aspects of Longwood Gardens 5-acre Research Nursery and serving as Curator of at least one Longwood Core Collection including guiding the process of Plant Collections Network accreditation for the collection.
Qualifications include a BS, MS or PhD degree in horticulture, botany or related field with at least 2 years of nursery, greenhouse or plant evaluation and trials experience; extensive knowledge of ornamental plant taxonomy, propagation and culture; excellent management, organizational, observation and critical thinking skills with strong attention to detail; and proven written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences with varying levels of knowledge and experience. We also require the willingness and ability to represent Longwood through membership in professional associations and to travel abroad and participate in plant exploration. A valid driver’s license is required; experience with BG-Base or another plant records database systems is a plus.
