More about Alex Johnson
Johnson grew up in a suburb of Dallas, Texas, where his musical training began with piano and percussion from an early age. He didn’t discover carillon until he started his undergraduate studies at the University of Rochester in 2015, after a campus tour guide mentioned that students could play the bells. Johnson recalls being hooked immediately by the instrument’s uniqueness. Johnson graduated in December 2018 with a degree in physics and then dedicated the spring of 2019 to studying carillon performance and composition on a fellowship program at Bok Tower Gardens in Florida. He will be studying at the Royal Carillon School ‘Jef Denyn’ in Mechelen, Belgium, for the 2019–20 academic year, and plans to pursue graduate work in music theory as well as a career involving carillon performance and teaching.
