Did you know that the first book printed featuring the use of photographs, both as scientific tool and as illustration, was made by English botanist and photographer Anna Atkins in 1843? Atkins pioneered the use of the cyanotype process to capture images of algae, ferns, flowers, and other botanicals. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a lovely monochromatic image in shades of blue. In this class, explore the history of this process and make your own cyanotypes using plant material harvested exclusively from Longwood.
