A Splash of Brilliance by Longwood’s P.S. du Pont Fellow Colvin Randall tells the amazing story of the fountains of Longwood Gardens, home to more waterworks than any other garden in the Americas. Spanning founder Pierre S. du Pont’s visits to European gardens and world’s fairs in the late 19th and 20th centuries, to the 2017 unveiling of Longwood’s revitalized Main Fountain Garden, the book is a fascinating tale of horticulture, technology, and travel, decades in the making. Illustrated with 266 beautiful historic and modern photos, the book is a retrospective of fountain evolution and a celebration of some of Longwood’s most iconic features.
The author of books, exhibits, and videos about Longwood, Randall has studied Longwood’s fountains since the 1970s, researching this story by studying sketches, blueprints, calculations, purchase orders, planting plans, hydraulic test sheets, newspaper articles, and interviews with those who built the fountains—in addition to designing and programming fountain displays since 1980.
