Longwood Debut

Michael Smith is the minister of music at St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh, located in Ft. Washington, PA, where he oversees a large music program for the 1,200-member parish, including a chorister program of 18 children and a semi-professional adult choir. In addition to performing recitals, as well as accompanying and conducting choirs around the world, Smith served as graduate assistant conductor to the famed Yale Glee Club during his time at Yale University.

Michael Smith by Mark TassoniPrior to his appointment at St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh, Smith served as chair of performing arts at The Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, where he oversaw all aspects of the PreK–12 Music and Theater programs while also serving as organist/choirmaster at The Church of the Good Shepherd, Rosemont. Before moving to the Philadelphia area, he served as director of music at Groton School in Groton, MA, where he held the Pratt Endowed Chair of Music.  

Smith earned his undergraduate degree in organ performance at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. He went on to earn graduate degrees in organ and conducting at Yale University, where he served as graduate assistant conductor to the famed Yale Glee Club. He has performed recitals, as well as accompanied and conducted choirs on tours throughout Europe, Africa, Russia, and South America.
