Estate Fruit House

Trained nectarine trees, grape vines, melons, lemons, tomatoes, figs, and other fruits create a sensuous garden experience that is half art, half horticulture.

Our gardeners cultivate some of Pierre S. du Pont’s favorite fruits in this Garden that uses historic techniques to produce crops under glass.

History of this Garden

Set within a 1921 greenhouse, Longwood’s Fruit House dates back to Mr. du Pont’s time, when carefully tended indoor edible plants provided bountiful crops year-round – a luxury in the times before efficient transportation and refrigeration.
