Our Science

Our vision is to use our scientific expertise and strategic partnerships to sustainably cultivate, conserve, and steward our natural world.

Our science team consists of more than 50 individuals dedicated to advancing our work in the key areas of conservation horticulture and collections, floriculture production, land stewardship and ecology, and soils and composting.  Our research efforts extend beyond our own inhouse state-of-the-art facilities to include field work in our region and with partners around the globe.

Watch Now: Longwood Gardens Science Strategy

Our Associate Vice President of Science Kate Santos, Ph.D., explores how our approach weaves together horticulture, ecology, and agriculture with art, stewardship, conservation, and sustainability.

Our Science Pillars

  • We conserve plants and ecosystems.
  • We grow our plants, knowledge, and collaborations to increase our impact.
  • We sustain our resources.
  • We create beauty that inspires through connection, education, and experience.

Illegal Plant Trade Coalition

Plants are the backbone of biodiversity and their loss affects us all. We are proud to join the international effort to mitigate extinction from plant trafficking led by Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI). The Illegal Plant Trade Coalition is a global alliance confronting the multibillion-dollar trafficking of wild plants.
