Designed for those looking to start their own landscape design practice, to those in horticulture and landscape fields looking to build their design skills, to hobbyists, our newly evolved Landscape Design Certificate gives you the design and drawing skills needed to create exquisite landscapes in the backyard and beyond.

We are always working to provide you with the best access to current trends and cutting-edge developments in landscape design. In that spirit, we are proud to announce our redesigned Landscape Design Certificate with new requirements and engaging content. This Certificate program is suited for those looking to start their own landscape design practice or those in the horticulture and landscape fields looking to build their design skills. The program is also perfect for those looking to expand their love and understanding of landscape design.  

Our robust curriculum, designed and taught by industry-leading professionals, enables you to transform your dreams into garden realities. With coursework in design theory, hand-drafting, best practices, plant selection and siting, and more, take the next step and grow your landscape design skills and knowledge. Classes are offered online, unless otherwise noted.

Over the course of the 147-hour program (126 hours of core courses, 21 hours of elective learning), render your own designs while mastering the design principles and graphical skills required to understand client needs, translate them to paper, and communicate your design intent.

Certificate Requirements

Core Courses (126 hours required)

In order to complete the Landscape Design Certificate, students must complete all of the following core courses:

  • People, Plants, and Landscape Design (8 hours)
    Learn how to define spaces that are truly supportive of people and plants through this online series. Discover a new design paradigm by exploring relationships between people and plants, yielding vibrant gardens with depth and relevancy.

    People, Plants, and Landscape Design must be taken first, before other Landscape Design Certificate coursework.

  • Sketching for Designers (10 hours)
    Enhance your sketching ability and improve your graphic communications skills. Sketch views of natural elements, engage in drawing exercises, explore different tools, and cultivate your skills. 

  • Introduction to Graphic Communications (9.5 hours)
    Learn the standard tools and practices used to represent the landscape in this informative online series. Using various media, drafting tools, and techniques, gain the confidence to communicate your design ideas effectively. 

    Prerequisite: Sketching for Designers 

  • Landscape Design Process and Practice (20.5 hours)
    This course is an in-depth approach to design processes, traditional landscape graphics, and topics related to sustainable landscapes. Through lectures and demonstrations, learn to produce professional-quality conceptual designs.

    Prerequisite: Introduction to Graphic Communications

  • Advanced Landscape Design (18 hours)
    Learn how to conceptualize gardens using a variety of drawing techniques and develop a more sophisticated understanding of design theory. Delve more deeply into design creativity, detailed garden features, and more advanced graphics by solidifying concepts presented in previous courses.

    Prerequisite: Landscape Design Process and Practice

  • Horticulture for Landscape Designers (16 hours)
    Gain a solid understanding of native plants, trees, shrubs, and perennials to then apply to landscape design during this in-person series.

  • Sustainable Landscape Design (10 hours)
    During this online series, study the landscape to recognize potential problems and identify solutions to reduce environmental impact and encourage biodiversity. 

  • Elements of Design (5.5-8 hours)
    Discover how to consider built spaces with a designer’s eye as you observe signature design elements and styles in a variety of landscapes, synthesizing the design theory you’ve learned throughout your landscape design coursework.

  • Comprehensive Planting Design (21 hours)
    Create beautiful planting designs with balance, repetition, and cohesiveness. Gain exposure to different garden situations, such as the sunny perennial border or woodland garden, while considering important ecological aspects. This practical course allows you to develop a planting plan based on realistic situations and to clearly communicate the desired effect and design intent.

    Prerequisites: Advanced Landscape Design, Horticulture for Landscape Designers

Electives (21 hours required)

In addition to the core coursework, students must complete at least 21 hours of qualifying elective coursework.

A selection of elective courses will be offered every year and are subject to change from year to year. Examples of Landscape and Garden Design Certificate elective courses include Asian-Inspired Garden Design, Math for the Garden and Landscape, The Business of Garden Design, Designing Themed Gardens, and Designing Stormwater Solutions.

If you have completed all required coursework and believe you are eligible to graduate, please send your completed tracking sheet to the Continuing Education team at continuingeducation@longwoodgardens.org.
