
Step into the timeless world of film photography with this hands-on workshop set against the inspiring backdrop of our Gardens.
Whether you're picking up a film camera for the first time or looking to reconnect with analog techniques, this experience offers the perfect blend of creativity and nature. This workshop is designed to slow you down, sharpen your eye, and help you see the world through a more intentional lens.
Led by professional photographer Drew Tolbert, learn the fundamentals of shooting with 35mm film—including camera settings, composition, lighting, and exposure. After a brief online introduction, head out into the Gardens to practice your skills, capturing the textures, colors, and seasonal beauty of autumn at Longwood. Afterward, reconvene online to review and share feedback as a group.

Location
Onsite at Longwood Gardens with additional online sessions.
This program may take place partially or entirely outdoors. Please dress for the weather and wear footwear suited for walking on uneven paths and through wet areas.
Instructor
Drew Tolbert is a Pennsylvania based photographer who has focused on architectural studies since 2002. He uses a variety of photographic techniques ranging from drone imagery to large format film.

Photos taken during photography classes at Longwood may not be sold for commercial uses.
Supplies
- 35mm film camera
- Especially if the camera is older, it should be checked to ensure there are no light leaks, that film advances, that the light meter works, and that all exposure controls are functioning.
- 35mm roll film
C-41 color negative only! Preferably 36 exposures.
Registration fee includes development and digitization for two rolls of color film.
