Led by assistant conductor Kensho Watanabe, The Philadelphia Orchestra celebrates its legacy of imagination, innovation, and excellence with an evening of music by American composers and Beethoven. Beginning with Michael Daugherty’s Flamingo, a wild and fun concerto for two tambourines, the orchestra relaxes with George Gershwin’s charming Lullaby before racing to intermission with Morton Gould’s American Symphonette No. 2. Concluding the program is Beethoven’s masterpiece Symphony No. 1.

More about The Philadelphia Orchestra

The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the preeminent orchestras in the world, renowned for its distinctive sound, desired for its keen ability to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences, and admired for a legacy of imagination and innovation on and off the concert stage. Inspiring the future and transforming its rich tradition of achievement, The Philadelphia Orchestra sustains the highest level of artistic quality, but also challenges—and exceeds—that level by creating powerful musical experiences for audiences at home and around the world.

Kensho Watanabe has been assistant conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra since the 2016–17 season and was the inaugural conducting fellow of the Curtis Institute of Music from 2013 to 2015, under the mentorship of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In April 2017, he made his critically acclaimed subscription debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra and pianist Daniil Trifonov, and recently conducted the Orchestra for his debut at the Bravo!
