After departing Longwood, our first stop is the Marion Coffin Gardens at Gibraltar, where we’ll explore Coffin’s creativity firsthand. Next, we’ll travel to Dumbarton Oaks and explore its terraced Italianate gardens designed by Beatrix Farrand.

Certificate Information

This Elements of Design tour is an optional add-on for the Italian-Inspired Garden Design class. Completing an Elements of Design tour or online class is required for the Landscape Design Certificate. Students wishing to receive credit must complete and submit an assignment designed specifically for this landscape tour.


This tour departs from Longwood’s Visitor Center parking lot. Trip leaves promptly as listed and runs rain or shine. Please note that this tour contains a good deal of walking and is an outdoor experience. While our pace will be slow, some areas require mildly strenuous walking. Appropriate footwear and water are recommended. Dress for all types of weather.
