Longwood Debut

Recently nominated for a Latin Grammy Award in the Best New Artist category, Nella creates a distinctively soulful blend inspired by Venezuelan folk songs, the music of the Andalusian region, and her contemporaries. Nella lends her voice to the soundtrack for Asghar Farhadi’s film, Everybody Knows, starring Javier Bardem, Ricardo Darín, and Penélope Cruz. Her recently released debut album, Voy, features songs written by Grammy Award-winning producer and composer Javier Limón. Voy sets Nella’s expressive voice over a clean, sparse accompaniment, and is global Latin music for the 21st century.

More about Nella

Born Marianella Rojas in Isla Margarita, an island in the Caribbean Sea off the northeastern coast of Venezuela, Nella spent hours as a child singing over recordings by powerhouse singers such as Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, and Mariah Carey. In 2011, she enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, majoring in performance, composition and production, and began singing in a trio that performed folk music from Latin America with jazz and pop influences. It was also in Boston that an a cappella performance by Nella of a Venezuelan song, La Negra Atilia, caught Javier Limón’s ear.

Nella has already garnered the support of Latin pop star Alejandro Sanz, and has performed with a variety of artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Carlos Vives, Luis Enrique, and Susana Baca. In Academy Award-winner Asghar Farhadi’s new movie, Everybody Knows, she sings songs written by composer and producer Javier Limón exclusively for the screenplay. The movie opened the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

For her first North American tour, reflecting the spare sound of the recording, Nella will be accompanied by a trio, featuring guitar, bass, and percussion. As for the repertoire, she plans to include not only the songs from Voy but also “some Venezuelan jewels,” such as La Negra Atilia, and classics by the legendary singer and songwriter Simón Díaz, such as Tonada de Luna Llena (Song of the Full Moon).
