Celebrate the fleeting beauty and refined artistry of Satsuki azalea bonsai with this exhibition that brings together rare cultivars, master growers, and centuries of horticultural tradition.
The name “Satsuki” refers to the fifth month of the traditional Japanese lunar calendar, corresponding to late May and June—the natural flowering season of these azaleas. Satsuki azaleas were selected and developed specifically for their suitability as bonsai, prized for their ability to flower reliably in containers and respond gracefully to long‑term training.
At the heart of the exhibition are 30–40 Satsuki Azalea bonsai displayed at one time, with a rotating selection drawn from more than 60 Japanese azalea hybrids imported from Japan. These trees represent both Longwood Gardens’ permanent bonsai collection and exceptional specimens on loan from The Kennett Collection.
Spanning over 20 distinct cultivars, the exhibition demonstrates the extraordinary diversity of Satsuki azaleas—from elegant shohin‑sized trees to larger, commanding specimens. Many featured bonsai display the dramatic, multi‑colored blooms for which Satsuki azaleas are world‑renowned, often with different flowers appearing on opposite sides of the same tree.
Selections include important works from Hiro Kobayashi, owner of Kobayashi Sangyou and one of the most influential Satsuki bonsai growers in the world. Kobayashi’s trees represent decades of refinement, seasonal discipline, and deep botanical knowledge passed through generations of Japanese azalea specialists.
The exhibition is staged on custom‑fabricated stands and backdrops inspired by traditional Japanese bonsai displays, emphasizing balance, proportion, and negative space. This formal presentation allows guests to experience each tree as both a horticultural achievement and an ephemeral living artwork—seen at its peak for just a brief moment each year.
