With a fossil record dating back 100 million years, magnolias have a long history of garden use.
Join Longwood Horticulturist Kieran Avis for a deep dive into the history, culture, and care of this ancient woody plant. Begin with a lecture in the Visitor Center Auditorium to explore the historic and cultural significance of magnolias, and how to grow and care for them yourself, with a focus on cultivars that are ideal for home garden use. Using your expanded knowledge, venture out into the Gardens to see magnolias in a garden setting—and spot several native varieties.
