Start your propagation experience in our Grove Studios, where you’ll learn the basics of orchid propagation with orchid expert and American Orchid Society Vice President Barb Schmidt. Then, join Longwood Horticultural Specialty Grower Greg Griffis on a tour of our Orchid House and learn more about Longwood’s extensive orchid breeding program. From there, go behind-the-scenes in our Lower Production Headhouse, where you’ll practice propagating Phalaenopsis orchids in a hands-on setting—after which you’ll take home seedlings to observe and watch them grow.

Instructor

Barbara Schmidt and Greg Griffis

Schmidt has been raising orchids for the last 20 years, maintains an orchid website at basorchidcare.com, and teaches orchid classes throughout the country. In 2023, the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA) invited Schmidt to speak at the 2024 World Orchid Conference in Tainan, Taiwan. Currently, she is the Vice President of the American Orchid Society and the Chair of the Education Committee.

Griffis was hired as the orchid grower at Longwood Gardens at the beginning of 2015. He purchased his first orchid from the 2010 Longwood Orchid Show, and he quickly was hooked. Griffis’s professional experience includes working as a grower and manager at Parkside Orchid Nursery in Pennsylvania and as an orchid grower at Hilo Orchid Farm in Hawaii.
