Fee for Innovators, Gardens Preferred, and Gardens Premium Members: $179


Fee includes all-day admission to the Gardens on the day the class is onsite.

Registrations may be cancelled up to two weeks before the event, and your registration fee, less a $30 processing fee, will be refunded.

Start your experience with an online orientation and brief discussion of night and low-light photography, then join instructor Andy Bale to capture the magic of the display at your own pace and with plenty of space in our West, East, and Main Conservatories. Then, conclude your experience with a friendly online critique and a chance to show off your work!

Onsite Session
Friday, December 12, 10:30 pm–Saturday, December 6, 1:30 am

Inclement weather date: Saturday, December 13, 2025

Online Review Session
Monday, December 22, 6:00–8:00 pm

Full course content includes both the online and the onsite components.

Location

Onsite in the Conservatories at Longwood Gardens with additional online sessions. Class location is subject to move depending on availability.

Instructor

Andy Bale

Andy Bale received his MFA from the University of Delaware in 2005, and his BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 1994. He has been a full-time Lecturer of Photography at Dickinson College since 2013, and served as an adjunct professor of Photography prior to that from 2005 until 2012. Bale's photographs are included in the permanent collections of Caisse d'Epargne in Toulouse, the Photomedia Center and Messiah College in Pennsylvania, and at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.  

Recommended Supplies 

  • Camera with (2) fully charged batteries and multiple memory cards
  • A variety of lenses, which include wide angle, macro, and even telephoto
  • Cable release
  • Tripod
  • Polarizing filter
  • ND filters
  • Lens cloth
