Large and Small Lake

The spring-fed lakes and rolling green lawns in this area are reminiscent of English parks.

Three seasons of color punctuate the lakes’ banks, including flowering trees in the spring, daylilies in the summer, and an explosion of fall foliage that is reflected off the water in October.

History of the Garden

The two spring-fed lakes used to be the site of boating parties and picnics when the property was owned by the Peirce family. As one of his first projects after purchasing the property, Pierre S. du Pont restored the area, adding a retaining wall to the north end of the Large Lake and landscaping the surrounding areas.
