Land Stewardship & Ecology

The actions we take today are crucial for preserving biodiversity.

Our team of land stewards and ecological scientists is dedicated to conserving the long-term biodiversity and vitality of our landscapes through restoration, stewardship, and research. By integrating ecology, native plant horticulture, and land management, the team works to protect and sustain these natural areas.

200 small, sturdy houses spread throughout our natural areas are homes for Eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis), a native songbird found from Canada to Nicaragua that lives in our region year-round.

As part of this conservation work, Longwood restores native plant communities, reconnects fragmented forests, and manages wildlife habitats to support resilient ecosystems. Collaborating with local and global organizations, we develop and share innovative ecological research and land stewardship practices to continuously adapt to an evolving environment.

Long-term research deepens the understanding of how ecosystems respond to environmental changes, helping refine land management practices and address broader challenges like urban development and climate change. Tools such as GIS mapping, controlled burns, targeted mowing, and scientific analysis aid in monitoring species and managing invasive plants—supporting ecosystems that can thrive now and in the future.

Longwood sits atop a ridgeline that feeds streams flowing into the Brandywine River and Delaware Bay. Efforts to protect these waterways include monitoring water quality, collaborating with neighbors on watershed plans, maintaining native plantings in stormwater catchments, and planting streamside forests to reduce runoff and erosion. These initiatives are part of Longwood’s holistic approach to watershed health.

We connect people to the beauty and diversity of meadows, forests, and streams, emphasizing the importance of conservation. Guests are offered the opportunity to experience native plants that thrive in home gardens, learn about the removal of invasive species, and engage with these natural spaces.
