It all starts with the soil. At Longwood, soil is the foundation of our horticultural excellence. By reusing organic materials, we nurture the source of our gardens’ beauty while actively reducing waste.
Every year, we divert 10,000 cubic yards of plant waste and soil from landfills, transforming these materials into essential products like compost, mulch, and wood chips. This process, rooted in both science and craftsmanship, enriches our soil, minimizes resource consumption, and extends the life cycle of our materials. From the ground up, our commitment to soil health drives the beauty and resilience of our gardens, ensuring they thrive today and for generations to come.
We lead by example with a cradle-to-cradle approach, maximizing every stage in the life of our plants. Since 1956, Longwood Gardens has turned spent plant material into high-quality compost, enriching our displays and creating a cyclical, sustainable ecosystem.
