Announcing Our Redesigned Floral Design Certificate

Designed for those in the floral design profession, as well as those looking to expand their love and understanding of flowers, our newly evolved Floral Design Certificate is now tailored to provide learners with a robust foundation in a variety of popular and historically significant design styles.

Graduates will master the design techniques and mechanical skills required to create stunning and successful floral designs, and will leave the program with a deep understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of design. If not working in the floral design industry, students will have the skills and knowledge needed to craft beautiful, successful designs for their homes, friends and family, and their communities.

Our pre-eminent Floral Design Certificate features personal direction from world-class experts, diverse coursework on the art and science of floral design, and ample opportunities for hands-on experience. Classes are offered in-person at Longwood Gardens, one of the great gardens of the world.

Certificate Requirements

In order to complete the Floral Design Certificate, students must complete a total of 156 hours of coursework (115 hours of core courses, 41 hours of elective learning). Please see below for additional information.

An understanding of color theory is essential for success in floral design. Learn the basics in this course, including how to read the color wheel, the various types of harmonies, and how to work with hue and saturation to achieve aesthetic success.

Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, comprises a long, rich history and numerous schools of study that continue to the present day. During this course, we’ll introduce ourselves to two of these schools and some of the design principles and practices that underpin Ikebana.

Floral Design Exam

Complete a written and practical exam to demonstrate mastery of the knowledge and skills required to be a successful designer.

The Floral Design Exam must be taken in order to complete the Floral Design Certificate. The exam is offered at least once per year.

Floral Design Foundations must be taken as the first class of the Certificate program; all other classes may be taken in any order.

Elective Learning (41 hours required)

Electives (35 hours required)

A selection of elective courses will be offered every year and are subject to change from year to year. Examples of Floral Design Certificate elective courses include Tropical Blooms Floral Design, Bouquets Four Ways, Modern Pot-et-Fleur, and Advanced Thanksgiving Centerpieces.

Masterclass (6 hours required)

All students must complete at least one 6-hour masterclass, which is counted towards your 41 required hours of elective learning. A selection of two to four  masterclasses will be offered each year and are subject to change from year to year.
