The exquisite blooms of our magnolia trees unfurl in early spring in a symphony of crisp whites, soft yellows, and rich pinks.
At Longwood Gardens, the legacy of these beautiful trees dates back to the Peirce family, who first introduced magnolias to the landscape. Two of their original plantings still stand today—living testaments to both the spirit of early botanical exploration in the Eastern United States and Longwood’s skillful tree care.
Our Magnolia Collection showcases a diverse selection of species and cultivated varieties, with a focus on those native to eastern North America. Additionally, we evaluate neo-tropical species for their potential in conservatory settings. This collection serves as a vital resource for display, education, research, and the preservation of genetic diversity, ensuring that the grandeur of magnolias continues to inspire for generations to come.
