Plant Records Management

The student will work closely with the Plant Information and Mapping team to learn the methods and techniques applied in maintaining and disseminating plant records information at a public garden.

Areas for Growth

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the principles of plant nomenclature
  • Create educational labels for visitors and accession labels for staff
  • Work alongside the Plant Information Field Specialist to conduct plant inventories and assessments, and input field observations in the plant records database
  • Work alongside the GIS Specialist to record GPS field data of the plant collection using mobile mapping methods

Qualifications

  • Completed a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, plant science, or geographic information science
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of plant identification skills and familiarity with principles of plant nomenclature
  • Experience using databases, spreadsheets, and GIS, or willingness to learn
  • Strong attention to detail and great organizational skills
  • Be able to work on multiple projects in a busy, fast-paced environment
  • Willing to work independently and as part of a group
  • Willing to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions
